More than a forecast.

Weather Lair goes beyond today's weather โ€” it builds a personal historical database and reveals patterns no other weather app shows you.

๐Ÿ—„๏ธ

Personal Weather Database

Every 30 minutes, Weather Lair captures a full weather snapshot โ€” temperature, humidity, wind, pressure, visibility, and more. Over time, this builds into a rich historical record.

๐ŸŽฏ

Forecast Accuracy Scoring

Captures forecasts when they're made, then scores them against actual conditions. See accuracy by city, lead time, and metric with a lead-time accuracy curve.

๐Ÿ“Š

Year-over-Year Analysis

Is this winter actually colder than last year? Compare any date range against the same period in previous years with side-by-side temperature, wind, and precipitation charts.

๐Ÿ“ˆ

Trend Analytics

Monthly averages, condition frequency charts, AQI trends, and rolling averages reveal weather patterns that daily forecasts never show.

๐Ÿ””

Custom Weather Alerts

Set threshold-based alerts on any metric โ€” freezing temps, high winds, AQI spikes, heat index warnings. Get notified instantly via macOS notifications.

Keyboard Shortcuts

Weather Lair is built for power users:

โŒ˜R  Refresh
โŒ˜1โ€“7 Switch tabs
โŒ˜N  Add city
โŒ˜F  Search
โŒ˜โ‡งF Toggle favorite
Press โŒ˜N or click the "+" button in the sidebar. Search for any city worldwide โ€” Weather Lair uses Apple's MapKit geocoding to find locations. US cities automatically use the National Weather Service API, while international cities use Apple WeatherKit with an Open-Meteo fallback.
No API keys are required for core weather features. The National Weather Service and Open-Meteo APIs are free and keyless. Two optional features use free API keys: AirNow (US air quality data) and FAA NOTAMs (aviation notices). Both are free to register and can be entered in Settings.
Weather Lair captures forecast data at the time it's issued, recording what was predicted for future dates. When those dates arrive, it compares the forecast against actual observed conditions. The Compare tab shows accuracy scores by metric (temperature, precipitation, wind) and a lead-time accuracy curve showing exactly how far ahead forecasts remain reliable for each city.
Aviation Mode is an optional feature for pilots. Enable it during onboarding ("Are you a pilot?") or anytime in Settings. It adds an Aviation tab with METAR/TAF decodes, flight category badges (VFR/MVFR/IFR/LIFR), crosswind calculators, personal weather minimums, NOTAMs, weather radar, flight planning with route briefings, and a digital flight log.
If you have iCloud enabled, Weather Lair syncs your city list, favorites, custom alerts, and tracked airports across your Macs using Apple's CloudKit. Historical weather data (snapshots, forecasts, flight logs) stays local to each Mac and is never synced. If iCloud is unavailable, the app automatically falls back to local-only storage.
Go to Settings โ†’ Data to export your entire weather database as a JSON file with full schema versioning. You can also import data from a previous export. The History tab additionally supports CSV export for individual date ranges and cities โ€” great for spreadsheet analysis.
Weather Lair uses dual providers: US cities pull from the National Weather Service (NOAA) โ€” government-grade 2.5km grid data with 7-day forecasts and text narratives. International cities use Apple WeatherKit with an Open-Meteo fallback. Air quality for US cities comes from the EPA AirNow network. Aviation data comes from the FAA Aviation Weather Center. A provider badge on each city shows which source is active.
